How many teams from each group qualify for the World Cup?

The final 32-team World Cup will take place in Qatar in 2022.

In the World Cup’s nearly 100-year existence, a variety of forms have been used.

In Uruguay in 1930, a round-robin format tournament with 13 teams was the original version. The competition was increased to 16 teams, and the format was a straight knockout four years later in Italy. As the World Cup evolved over the years, later editions used the best third-place finishers, round-robin final groups, and additional group stages.

The World Cup has been an eight-group, 32-team affair since France in 1998, with a simple knockout bracket coming after the group stage. The format of the 2022 World Cup will remain the same. However, the 2026 World Cup will feature 48 teams. Qatar may be the final country to adhere to the established roadmap.

Here are a description of the Qatar 2022 tournament’s format and how many teams advance to the knockout rounds.

How many teams from each group will qualify for the 2022 World Cup?

As previously stated, Qatar 2022 will have 32 teams.

In order to select the top two finishers from Groups A through H, the teams were divided into eight groups of four based on the FIFA rankings and the standings of their respective confederations. The top two teams from each group’s 16 teams will be put into a bracket, with the group winners playing the runners-up in the round of 16. Each round (round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, and championship game) will feature single-elimination matches between teams. Teams will then play a 30-minute overtime period if knockout matches are deadlocked at the end of regulation time (divided into 15-minute halves). A penalty shootout would be held if the score remained tied.
